About Surfboard

Surfboard helps people take control of information overload. We’re building an AI chief of staff for the systems-thinkers and their teams. They run revenue operations, manage startup operations, lead agencies, run customer success teams, or orchestrate their own productivity like a business. They run homes. They are high up in organizations, and on the line.

They have to synthesize a never ending flow of data from many sources, and use it to orchestrate and lead. Surfboard simplifies and accelerates their work, giving them room to go beyond their expectations.

The role

You’ll own Surfboard’s growth from 40 to 400+ active users and beyond. This isn’t traditional product marketing—you’re a hybrid operator who thinks in PLG systems, lives in data, and builds growth into the product itself.

You'll be responsible for

  • Activation & Retention: Own the funnel from signup to “aha moment” to retained user—identify friction, ship experiments, measure impact
  • Growth Experimentation: Run high-velocity A/B tests across onboarding, messaging, pricing, and viral loops—prioritize ruthlessly, learn fast
  • Product-Led Growth Strategy: Design growth features (sharing, collaboration, messaging, notification) and get them on the product roadmap
  • Data & Analytics: Build dashboards, analyze cohorts, measure CAC/LTV, translate data into actionable insights
  • Cross-Functional Orchestration: Work with product, engineering, and design to ship growth experiments—you influence roadmap, not just execute marketing tactics
  • Messaging & Positioning: Translate customer pain into compelling value props for each ICP segment
  • Instrumentation Ownership: Turn our measurement framework into growth loops—activation triggers, retention mechanics, viral coefficients

What success looks like in 6 months

  • Double-digit activation improvement
  • Retention cohorts show measurable improvement
  • 2+ growth experiments shipped per month
  • Weekly growth review owns all key metrics
  • Founders are out of growth execution, focused on product and fundraising

About you

You’ve spent 4–7 years in growth and marketing, with at least two at a product-led company like Notion, Figma, Slack, or similar — places where you learned that the product is the marketing. You love products and take pride in working on great software that is crafted and delightful to use. You’ve built and operated PLG funnels end to end: freemium models, self-serve onboarding, activation loops that compound. You’re as comfortable thinking about individual user activation as team-level expansion, because you’ve done both — and you’ve owned a growth metric and moved it in ways you can point to.

Data is how you work, not a buzzword. You’re fluent in CAC, LTV, cohort analysis, and retention curves. You understand pricing as a growth lever. You run real experiments, interpret statistical significance, and make calls from evidence. You’re resourceful by nature — the kind of person who finds the 20% of effort that drives 80% of results and says no to everything else. You love product.

You’re obsessed with tooling, you build automations to eliminate repetitive work, and you can hold your own with engineers talking APIs and data flows. Most importantly, you think in systems: growth isn’t a collection of tactics, it’s an interconnected engine — funnel to activation to retention to referral — and you build the repeatable processes and experiments that make it run. You ship fast, learn fast, and iterate without waiting for permission.

This isn’t a role for traditional enterprise PMMs, pure brand marketers, or senior leaders looking to delegate. This is a hands-on builder’s role, and you wouldn’t have it any other way.

How to apply

What to include

  • Resume or LinkedIn profile We read them (not just machines). Focus on PLG companies and growth metrics you’ve owned.
  • Brief note Answer these three questions:
    1. What’s a PLG funnel you’ve owned? What metric did you move, and by how much?
    2. What’s a popular growth tactic you think is overrated, and why?
    3. What’s your current tool stack for growth work? What do you love/hate?
  • Portfolio (optional) Dashboards, experiment results, campaigns, or growth artifacts you’re proud of.

What we're looking for

  • Evidence of PLG experience — company names, metrics moved, experiments shipped
  • Critical thinking — can you say no? Can you prioritize?
  • Tooling fluency — what’s in your stack?
  • Passion for the problem — what draws you to this problem and product?
  • Concise communication — we value clarity; no generic filler

What we don't need

  • Generic cover letters about why you love Surfboard
  • Long narratives — bullet points are fine
  • Formal writing — casual and direct is better
